President's and Tournament Chair Collaboration Report…February 2012

Well the first tournament of the year is in. It’s been a long time since we have been able to play in January and for a while it looked like we might not get this one in. We had a great turnout. 64 signed up, 3 cancelled on Sunday morning with only 2 quitting after 9 holes, not bad for the first tournament of the year. Is it just me or does it seems that when we schedule a tournament we get good weather the week before and the week after but bad weather the weekend of our tournament? We can sure use the rain but having it on a non tournament weekend would be nice for a change.

We have a first time winner in our 50-50 raffle. January’s winner was Jim Derdevanis..

I noticed some slow play; when the interval for groups turning in score cards goes from 15 minutes to 30 minutes or more it’s not hard for even me to figure it out. I also received some complaints not from the course but from some of the players in the tournament. As you know the target goal for the round is 4 hours and 40 minutes. We were doing really well the last half of 2011 and there was no reason not to expect the same in 2012. Remember don’t worry about where the group behind you is, your responsibility is to keep up with the group in front of you, if you get behind catch up. Remember play ready golf. If you’re ready and won’t endanger anyone in your group or in close proximity to your location and intended line of play hit away. Limit searches to 5 minutes or less. Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated.

Membership Update: Current Membership is 118. We are on the pace with last year. Hopefully we can get to 130 and beyond soon.

Rule of the month: A player hits his approach shot onto the green. He marks his ball, cleans it and puts it in his pocket while waiting for his turn to putt. When it’s his turn to play he puts down a ball and putts out. When he takes the ball out of the hole he realizes that it wasn’t the ball he started the hole with and subsequently hit onto the green. What’s the ruling?

As the New Year starts please make sure that you post ALL of your scores. The only exception to this is the WPGC tournament scores, which are always posted by the Tournament Chairman. It is the Handicap Chairman’s responsibility to monitor indexes and the posting of scores. Golfers are required to post their score as soon as practical upon completion of the round. Each golfer is supposed to have an index that represents their potential; not posting your scores prevents this from happening. The Handicap Chairman has the authority to post not only the score that was known to not have been posted but also post a “Penalty” score as well. This “Penalty” score consist of the lowest score played derived from looking at your history. This as you might suspect will bring your index down in a hurry so you are encouraged to post your real score and not force “penalty” scores to be posted. Please do not put the club in the position to have to resort to posting penalty scores. Please post all adjusted scores according to the NCGA score adjustment/posting guidelines.
You can post scores from the link above....Under Handicap, Post a Score.
NCGA as a smartphone website where you can post scores directly...http://mobile.ncga.org/
They also have a NEW Mobile App to post scores...http://www.ncga.org/mobileapp/

The last of the Club sponsored orders for logo Shirts/Hats has been placed. The total from the 3 orders came to 50 shirts and 19 hats. At this time there are no plans for the club to be the order contact. Anyone wishing to order can do so at Acme Awards located at 25613 Dollar St #2 in Hayward (I believe it’s off Harder Rd near Mission Blvd right across from the KMart store). You can either bring something in to have it put on(they will put the logo on just about anything) or you can purchase something in the store.

And the Ruling is! A player is allowed to changes balls after finishing a hole and before starting the next hole but once you start a hole with a ball you are required to finish the hole with that ball unless it is lost, hit out of bounds or becomes damaged during the playing of the hole. After taking his first stroke that ball became the ball in play and he was required to finish the hole using it. In addition under Rule 15-2 the player would incur a 2 stroke penalty for having played an illegally substituted ball. It doesn’t matter if it was accidental or intentional. Had the player noticed before making his first stroke he would have been allowed with no penalty to replace it with the original ball.

Golf League: The Golf Course is considering organizing and starting a “Golf League”. They did not give details other than Play would be 9 holes sometime during the weekday played in the afternoon possibly starting in the summer. They asked if we would include a short paragraph in the next newsletter. If you are interested please contact Tom Jones in the Pro Shop. This all is still tentative so he is basically looking to see how much interest if any there might be.

Updated: 9th Hole Blue NCGA disk. Lost but now found! The Blue NCGA disk on the 9th hole has been located on the upper tee box. (Upper Tee Box Location: The Blue tee box area hasn't been used for many years. If you are on the 8th green, looking left (east) you can see the railroad ties and steps for the tee box.)  A group of us have been teeing off from up there for a few weeks now. At 566 yards (making it the longest hole on the course by 85 yards), it really changes the hole dramatically. I have made inquires to determine if they intent to maintain the tee area, making it available for play. If I can get assurances that they will, you can expect to see a grand reopening of the upper tee box for tournament play sometime soon.
