Monthly News and Highlights…August 2017

President's Report
Hello Members,

I hope everyone is having a great time as summer rolls into fall.

The course is starting to show some wear but considering how we started the year I look at every day as a blessing.

Limited Time Membership Special:
We are starting to get some new members thanks to the current special that is going on until the end of the month. $40 to play for the rest of 2017, have you ever seen such a deal? Throw in a free round of golf (for new members) at Redwood Canyon and it's almost FREE! Plus free twilight round at Poppy Hills or Poppy Ridge. This is a perfect opportunity to invite the spouse, friend, colleague or family member to give YOUR CLUB a try by JOINING.

"Come play with a Board Member":
"Come play with a Board Member” on Sunday Morning for 18 holes of golf. This is an open play format for any member who wants to play on Sunday without the need to arrange your own foursome. This is limited to 6 spots on a first come first server bases for our 7am and 7:08am tee times (not available tournament Sundays). FYI, we usually finish around 11'ish so most of the day is still yours.  Depending on response, we might modify the “first come, first server” to give priority to members that have not play in the prior weeks. Please email “” to reserve your spot. This is a great opportunity to have some fun and to have your voice be hear. If you "Beat a Board Member" think of the bragging rights. ;-)

October Board Election/Lunch:
It is getting to be that time of year again, our Board Elections are approaching. The positions of President, Secretary and Director are up this year. As a Golf Club Officer or Director you help determine the direction the Club takes. The board’s goals are to improve our member’s golfing experience. So let me, or any board member, know if you’re interested in being an integral part of your club. We will have a point person after our next Board meeting.

Leadership Meeting Highlights:
The July 11 meeting with Touchstone and Redwood Canyon Golf Clubs was very informative. Touchstone was open with the lease process and its reasoning for bring Wedgewood in to run the Food and Beverage side of the property.

As far that the course goes, we were able to discuss Hole by Hole issues and recommendations. Of course, Touchstone will need to prioritize the items both financially and staffing.

Here are some of the items discussed:
- additional Tree Work has been Schedule (this include trimming and removal).
- repairing leaks throughout the course (1, 4, 9 and 16 to name a few).
- status of replacing bridges and clearing debris from creek.
- adding foot bridges to 3, 5, & 7 (leaving only 1 cart bridge on 5).
- completely redoing 14 blue tee box.
- adding railroad ties to left side of path near 3 green.
- adding Drop Area to 14, near the small tree next to cart path.
- re-staking course with lateral and OB markers.
- replacing flags (not to use Blue [back], Black [middle] combo again)
- Wedgewood start dates to take over Food and Beverage (as soon as the lease is signed).
- new cart lease (as soon as the lease is signed).

Lease Update:
With all the damage to the course from the winter storms, the lease signing has been postponed while all involve bring the course back to a playable condition. EBMUD, EBRPD and Touchstone Golf have all been working hard to made that happen. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the lease was sign very soon. Always the optimist.

2017 Membership: 91 Members / Goal 150
We are still looking for more members, so please pass the word. Membership forms are available on the website, above the computer in the Pro Shop and on the Bulletin Board on the wall in the Bar annex. We look forward to seeing you on the course next year. Why not invite a friend too!

2017 Tournament Calendar Import:
I created a file ((2017_wpgc_events.ics) [revised 12/17] that you can download & use to import our Tournament Dates into most calendar programs. To import it, do an internet search such as "import .ics into....(iphone, Android or Google Calendar)" to find directions for your calendar program. Standard warning...use at your own risk.

Please still make payment to "WPGC/WPMC"
Your Board and our Treasurer have asked me to remind you that while the course has a new name, our club does not. Please continue to make your checks out to "WPMC". The board will be discussing a name change at the next several meetings to address some issues with changing the name. We will keep you informed of the progress and send out official notice if and when the name change occurs.

Steve Falzone, President

Tournament Chair Report

The July tournament has concluded with the first rounds of the 2018 NCGA 2 man Best Ball and NCGA Regional Zone Qualifiers. The Team of Joe Johnson and Steve Falzone are the leaders in the 2 man. Mark Christensen, Mark Hemenez, Jim Derdevanis and Jim Folk are the leaders in the Regional Zone. Both are close with several still within striking distance to catch and pass the leaders. The results of the first round are posted on the website and the board in the Bar. The second rounds for both will be during the September 17 tournament.

Pace of play last month could have been a little better. There are still too many gaps that need to be closed but overall completion times were pretty good. Please play ready golf and remember you are trying to win the net flight in the Golf Club’s tournament not the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open or the PGA Championship.

During the August tournament we will be playing the ball down. There will be exceptions that will be defined in the rules posted on the first tee but otherwise you will play it as you find it. Course conditions will be monitored which could result in changes or modifications to play up to the day of the tournament. You are advised to at least glance though the rules before starting.

The August tournament is a hectic one for me as we have several competitions going on at the same time. For the majority of those playing Saturday/Sunday there will be a Net Flight Eclectic tournament. For those playing on Sunday only there will be a Net flight tournament. We will also be holding our club Championship during the Saturday/Sunday rounds with the player having the lowest 2 day combined gross score winning the title. Sundays round will also be counted as the 2nd round of the October Skins qualifier.

As you can see there will be a lot for me to keep track of over the 2 days so please play fast and get me those score cards as soon as possible.

We will continue for the rest of the year to play the course stakes for rulings as well as play the right side of the creek on the 7th hole as a lateral hazard. There will be periodic updates and changes to the tournament rules posted on the first tee so I would suggest you read them before starting.

Just want to remind you that the entry deadline is set so I can get an idea of how many players there are and notify the course if we need more times or I can release some so they can use them for the general public. If your entry is mailed late and will not be received within 1-2 days of the deadline, you might want to send me an email at the address listed below with a heads up that it may be late. I want to get everyone in but in the past some entries have arrived closer to the tournament date rather than the deadline date and were close to being excluded from the tournament player count.
